Height Safety Consulting

Height safety refers to the safety precautions adopted to prevent people from falling while working at heights, including above, below, or on the ground. Falls from height are the leading cause of workplace deaths and serious injuries.

In 2012, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) initiated a targeted harm reduction programme to address the issue through the Preventing Falls from Height Project. MBIE then released the best practice guide for working at height in New Zealand.

A chartered professional (CPEng) engineer should design a permanent anchor point as part of these requirements, and since the release of the MBIE Best Practice Guidelines, we have worked with most of the country’s installers of height safety systems, assisting with the design and final inspection and certification of these systems, including fall arrest and fall prevention, inspecting roof anchor systems and static line systems.

In the past 10 years, we have lost count of how many roofs, wind turbines, cellphone towers and meteorological masts we have been on or up!

Rob Holland (CPEng) actively engages with various bodies to improve working at height practices and has presented several webinars on this topic to various industry bodies (such as Engineering New Zealand) and has a passion for working with as many workplaces around New Zealand as possible to improve our working at height safety record.
