Fire Engineering Projects

Not only do we have significant amounts of in-house experience preparing fire reports for more conventional buildings (such as residential, warehousing, commercial and retail spaces), we have also completed a rich range of fire safety designs for specialist use buildings. These include such buildings as wastewater pumping stations, paint spray booths and grit blasting booths, indoor sports and amusement centres, chemical processing plants and theatres.

Sir Howard Morrison Centre

Originally engaged to assist with the fire and evacuation modelling to demonstrate compliance of the new design for the building, we were later engaged to complete the Construction Monitoring for the project and watch the transformation of this building take shape.

Taking the opportunity to economise on site visits, we also assisted with the design and inspection of the height safety systems for the building!

Rainbows End

Nelligan Consulting Engineers have partnered with Rainbows End over the last few years with multiple projects and this unique client gives us the opportunity to utilise our expertise in multiple areas, including amusement device certification, fire risk management and building fire safety.

We have assisted the management team with the ongoing safety programme of interesting and challenging ‘buildings’ such as the Log Flume, Gold Rush and transition from the Motion Master to the new 7D Spectra ride. The unique use of these buildings means we often need to employ ‘out of the box’ thinking to offer alternative fire safety solutions while still satisfying the Consenting Authority that compliance with the Building Code has been achieved.

Gordons Market 'Redevelopment - Papua New Guinea

The Gordon’s Market Redevelopment project was a complete rebuild of the largest produce market in the South Pacific, which accommodates up to 1,350 vendors, 80% of whom are women. The project was supported by the UN Women organisation and opened in 2019.

The building consists of two levels, each with an approximate floor area of 4300m² and up to 3,400 occupants.

Nelligan Consulting Engineers was tasked with completing an Alternative Solution Fire Design to satisfy the local authorities that the building would be safe for its occupants in a fire. Our solution included Fire Modelling and an in-depth analysis of the evacuation times for the crowded spaces using modelling software, simulating multiple scenarios.

170-174 Te Atatu Road

The development at 170-174 Te Atatu Road consists of one 2-storey and ten 3-storey residential buildings on one compact site.

The architectural design called for a number of innovative fire engineering solutions including a smoke control system with opening louvres at the top of the shared escape routes (compliance demonstrated with computer modelling), and Alternative Solutions for the single means of escape and a fire rated 'picture frame' to prevent vertical fire spread while maintaining the desired external appearance.

Administrator House, 44 Anzac Avenue

What started as a relatively simple 'change of use' fire report quickly turned into a complex problem to solve the multiple historic issues with the building, including remediation of the extensive passive fire shortcomings. This project was our most complex and difficult computer modelling exercise to date, including sensitivity studies for the effects of wind and simulating the inclusion of a new stairwell pressurisation fan. However this effort ensured that our client received his Consent and the building is now considerably safer for all its occupants.

Franklin Hospital

In a partnership with CoveKinloch, Nelligan Consulting Engineers was engaged as the Construction Monitoring Fire Engineer for this project. We conducted a large number of site inspections, advised on passive fire compliance issues and supervised the final testing of the multiple safety systems to ensure the fire safety features performed as designed.
